Canadian Biweekly vs Semi-monthly Paycheck Explainer

Same “twice a month” label, different math. Biweekly is every 14 days (26 paycheques). Semi-monthly is twice per calendar month (24). Here’s the difference — and when your third payday lands.

In Canada, “paid twice a month” can mean either schedule. Your pay stub or offer letter usually says biweekly or semi-monthly — and that wording decides how many deposits you get in a year.

Fixed calendar dates (e.g. 15th & last day). Always two paydays per month — never a third cheque.

Messaging lock: Biweekly is a true 26-pay cycle. It is not the same as semi-monthly. Budget tools that assume “two pays every month” miss your 3-paycheck months and undercount annual deposits.

Why the difference shows up in your budget

  • Monthly bills on biweekly pay: Some months you cover rent/utilities from two cheques; in a 3-paycheck month you have an extra deposit that isn’t “already spoken for” by the usual monthly stack.
  • Semi-monthly feels even: Two fixed dates line up neatly with monthly rent — but you never get those two extra annual deposits.
  • Safe-to-Spend needs the right cycle: Averaging a monthly budget across “two pays” works for semi-monthly. On biweekly, plan per cheque (and flag the third-pay months) so you don’t spend the buffer early.

When do 3-paycheck months hit?

With this schedule: January and July have three paydays. Semi-monthly would still be two in every month (24 total). Plan buffers and savings transfers around the third cheque — don’t treat it like a surprise bonus you already spent.
